Why You Need Mobile Data in Italy
Italy is the world's fifth most visited country, and it rewards travellers who have constant connectivity. Without data, you can't:
- Navigate: Italian cities have labyrinthine medieval streets. Google Maps is the difference between finding your trattoria and wandering lost through alleyways.
- Translate: Outside major tourist spots, English is limited. Google Translate helps with menus (especially regional dishes), signs, and conversations.
- Book and skip lines: Timed-entry tickets for the Colosseum, Uffizi, Vatican Museums, and dozens of other sites must be booked online. Many sell out days in advance.
- Stay connected: WhatsApp is Italy's primary messaging app. Your hotel, Airbnb host, and tour guides all communicate through it.
The Real Cost of Roaming in Italy
On a UK plan, Italy is in every big network's Europe zone, but most plans started since 2021 pay to use it. EE charges £2.72 a day (or £16.50 for a week, £30 for 15 days), unless you joined before 7 July 2021. Vodafone charges £2.75 a day (eight days £16, 15 days £21), unless your plan includes Euro Roam or Global Roam. Three charges £2.75 a day if you joined or upgraded on or after 18 December 2025, and £2 if you joined between October 2021 and then. O2 includes Europe on every plan, up to 25GB. A travel eSIM is a fixed price you pay once, and leaves your UK line free for calls and bank texts - prices from each network's own guide, checked 9 October 2026. Work out your own trip:

No visa is needed, but Italy is in the Schengen area, so your 90 days in any 180 are shared with every other Schengen country you visit in that time. Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive and be valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area.
Since 10 April 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System replaces the passport stamp: on your first crossing you give fingerprints and a photo at the border. It is free, and the record lasts three years. ETIAS, the EU's travel authorisation, is not running yet and will cost 20 euros when it starts - any site charging for it today is not the official one. Border officers can also ask for proof of accommodation, travel insurance, a return ticket and enough money for the stay.
Two Italian costs catch British visitors out: most big cities add a tourist tax per night, paid at the hotel and often in cash, and Venice may charge an access fee on the day you visit. Your GHIC or EHIC covers state healthcare. You must declare cash of 10,000 euros or more.
Getting there is easy from almost anywhere in Britain. British Airways flies to Rome, Milan, Venice, Bologna, Florence and Palermo from Heathrow, Gatwick and London City; Jet2 flies from its regional bases to Rome, Naples, Catania, Palermo, Pisa, Venice, Verona, Olbia and Turin in two to three and a half hours; and Ryanair serves 26 Italian airports from Stansted alone. Italy is always one hour ahead of the UK. Sockets are types C and L, so bring a European adaptor.

How Much Data Do You Actually Need in Italy?
- Light use (maps, messaging, email): 1-2 GB per week
- Moderate use (add social media, photos): 3-5 GB per week
- Heavy use (video calls, streaming, hotspot): 7-10 GB per week
Italy's Instagram-worthy scenery means most travellers upload more photos than usual. Plan for moderate to heavy usage. Use our calculator for a personalised estimate:

🇮🇹Italy eSIM
Nationwide coverage across all 20 regions. Works in Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, Naples, the Amalfi Coast, Sicily, Sardinia, Cinque Terre, and everywhere in between — including rural Tuscany and the Dolomites.
Popular Italy Destinations
Rome
The Eternal City demands data. Between the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, and Trastevere, you'll rely on Google Maps to navigate ancient streets that don't follow any grid. Timed-entry tickets for the Vatican and Colosseum should be booked on your phone as soon as slots open. Rome's bus system is confusing even for locals — real-time transit data is invaluable.
Florence
The birthplace of the Renaissance packs world-class art into a compact city. Data helps you book same-day Uffizi or Accademia tickets, find the best gelato shops away from tourist traps, and navigate day trips to the Tuscan countryside, San Gimignano, and Siena.
Venice
Venice has no street grid, no cars, and addresses that make no logical sense. Google Maps is genuinely essential here. You'll also need data for checking vaporetto (water bus) schedules, booking gondola rides, and finding restaurants away from the overpriced San Marco area.
Amalfi Coast
Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello cling to dramatic cliffs above the Mediterranean. Data is essential for booking the SITA bus (the cliff-hugging ride between towns), checking ferry schedules, and finding hiking trails like the Path of the Gods.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the eSIM work on Italian trains?
Yes. Italy's Trenitalia and Italo high-speed trains have good mobile coverage along major routes (Rome-Florence-Venice-Milan). You may experience brief drops in tunnels through the Apennine Mountains, but coverage is excellent overall.
Can I use Google Maps offline in Italy?
Yes — and we recommend downloading offline maps for your destinations. Your eSIM data will still be used for real-time navigation, transit schedules, and finding restaurants and attractions.
Will my phone work in Italy?
Most phones released since 2018 support eSIM, including iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, and Google Pixel 3 and newer. Italy uses standard European LTE bands compatible with most international smartphones.
Is an eSIM better than a TIM tourist SIM?
For most travellers, yes. TIM tourist SIMs cost $20-30, require visiting a physical store with your passport, and involve removing your home SIM. An eSIM is cheaper, instant, and lets you keep your home number active for calls and texts.
Do I need an Italy eSIM or multiple country plans?
If you're only visiting Italy, the Italy-specific eSIM offers the best value. If your trip includes other European countries (a common Rome-Paris-Barcelona itinerary, for example), browse our countries page for plans covering each destination.
