What is a Travel eSIM?

Updated:

A travel eSIM is a digital SIM card you install on your phone before a trip. No SIM kiosk queues, no daily roaming fees: you buy a prepaid data plan online, scan a QR code, and your phone connects to a local network the moment you land.

Because the eSIM is built into your phone’s hardware, there is nothing physical to swap or lose. Your home SIM stays active for calls and SMS while the travel eSIM handles data at local prices - the dual-SIM setup that most modern iPhones and Android phones support out of the box.

eSIMpass travel eSIMs work in 200+ countries and regions, arrive instantly by email and QR code, and need no app and no registration paperwork. A 1GB week of data starts at under $2.

Travel eSIM FAQ

What is a travel eSIM and how is it different from a normal eSIM?
A travel eSIM is a prepaid data plan delivered as a digital SIM, designed for short-term use abroad. Unlike a network eSIM tied to a monthly contract, you pay once for the data and validity you need - no contract, no cancellation process.
Will my phone work with a travel eSIM?
Most phones released since 2018 support eSIM, including iPhone XR and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, and Google Pixel 3 and newer. Your phone must also be network unlocked. Check our eSIM compatible devices list to be sure.
Can I keep my WhatsApp number while using a travel eSIM?
Yes. WhatsApp stays linked to your original number even when your data comes through the travel eSIM. Keep your home SIM installed and everything works as usual.
When should I install my travel eSIM?
Install it at home on Wi-Fi before departure, then turn on the eSIM line when you land. That way you are connected within minutes of arrival instead of hunting for airport Wi-Fi.
Is a travel eSIM cheaper than roaming?
Usually, yes - and outside the EU free-roaming zone the gap is huge. Network roaming packs run up to $15 per day, while a week of travel eSIM data often costs $3-5 in total. On a two-week trip that can mean over $150 saved.
What happens if I run out of data?
Top up the eSIM already on your phone in minutes by signing in with the email you ordered with, even mid-trip on hotel Wi-Fi - no new QR code. If it has expired or its network does not offer top-ups, buy another plan and scan the new QR code; delivery is instant wherever you are.
Do travel eSIMs include a phone number?
Most travel eSIMs are data-only, which keeps prices low. You still receive calls and SMS on your home number via dual SIM, and you can call over WhatsApp or FaceTime using eSIM data.
Are there activation or hidden fees?
No. The price you see at checkout is the full price - no activation fee, no top-up requirement, no auto-renewal. Travel eSIMs are prepaid, so overspending is impossible.
Do you offer unlimited data travel eSIMs?
Yes, where the destination supports them. Unlimited plans are priced per day and have no allowance cap, though fair-use throttling may apply; they run on the travel dates you select at checkout. Per-GB bundles from 1GB to 50GB run alongside them - those are the ones you can tether from, and their clock only starts when you first connect at your destination.
Can I use a travel eSIM as a personal hotspot?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
I am visiting several countries - do I need an eSIM for each one?
Not necessarily. Regional plans like the Europe eSIM (31 countries) or the Asia eSIM cover a whole region with a single QR code. For multi-region trips you can install several eSIMs side by side and switch between them in settings.
Can I buy a travel eSIM after I have already arrived?
Yes. Delivery is instant by email, so you can buy on airport Wi-Fi or at your hotel and be online minutes later. Installing before departure is simply more convenient.
