Hong Kong SAR China eSIM FAQ for UK Travellers

Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides mobile data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Hong Kong SAR China?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in Hong Kong SAR China?
Your Hong Kong SAR China eSIM uses a local mobile network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Hong Kong SAR China eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Hong Kong SAR China. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Your eSIM for Hong Kong - open internet, unlike the mainland

Good news for connectivity: Hong Kong is not behind mainland China’s firewall, so Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and the rest work normally on a Hong Kong eSIM with no VPN needed. Install it before you fly, switch off airplane mode on arrival, and you are online straight away.

One important caveat: a Hong Kong plan does not cover mainland China. If your trip crosses the border to Shenzhen or beyond, you will want a separate China eSIM for that leg.

Getting online at Hong Kong International (HKG)

The eSIM connects the moment you turn off airplane mode at HKG. Your Airport Express ticket, Octopus top-up info, maps and ride-hailing are ready before you reach the platform.

Coverage across the city and the MTR

Hong Kong has world-class mobile infrastructure: dense 5G across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, and full coverage deep inside the MTR. Maps, translation and transit apps work seamlessly as you move underground and between districts.

Hong Kong from the UK

British citizens can visit Hong Kong for up to six months - 180 days on the Immigration Department's list - without a visa, on a passport valid for at least a month after you leave. BN(O) passports are no longer accepted for immigration clearance. And note one rule that catches British visitors out: since 30 April 2026, even carrying an e-cigarette or vape in a public place is illegal (gov.uk, updated 1 April 2026).

British Airways and Cathay Pacific fly non-stop from Heathrow in about 12 and a half to 13 hours - Cathay up to five times a day - and Cathay also flies direct from Manchester. Hong Kong is seven hours ahead of the UK in British Summer Time and eight in winter. It uses the same three-pin type G sockets as the UK, so no adaptor is needed.

What your UK network charges

EE charges £8 a day (£40 a week), O2 Travel is £7 a day, Vodafone £8 a day on plans started since August 2021, and Three £5 a day on most plans (£8 on some plans started since December 2025).

Good to know before you go

Do Google and WhatsApp work in Hong Kong?+

Yes, normally - Hong Kong is not behind mainland China’s firewall, so the usual apps work without a VPN.

Does a Hong Kong eSIM also work in mainland China?+

No - it covers Hong Kong only. For Shenzhen or anywhere across the mainland border you need a separate China eSIM.

Does it work on the MTR?+

Yes - Hong Kong has full mobile coverage throughout the MTR, so maps and transit apps work underground.

Do UK plugs work in Hong Kong?+

Yes. Hong Kong uses the same three-pin type G sockets as the UK, at 230 V.

Can I take a vape to Hong Kong?+

No. E-cigarettes are banned in Hong Kong, and since 30 April 2026 possessing one in a public place is illegal (gov.uk, updated 1 April 2026).
