Nepal eSIM FAQ for UK Travellers

Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides mobile data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Nepal?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in Nepal?
Your Nepal eSIM uses a local mobile network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Nepal eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Nepal. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Nepal from the UK: visa fees, and trekking without signal

British passport holders need a visa, for up to 90 days. Nepal's Department of Immigration lets you apply and pay online before you go, or apply online up to 15 days ahead and collect and pay at Kathmandu airport: 30 US dollars for 15 days, 50 for 30 days and 125 for 90 days, with extensions at 3 dollars a day. Your passport needs six months' validity, and border officers can ask for travel insurance and your first night's booking (gov.uk, updated 1 October 2026).

There is no non-stop flight from Heathrow, so you connect on the way. Nepal is four hours 45 minutes ahead of the UK in British Summer Time and five hours 45 in winter - one of the few places with a quarter-hour offset.

What works on the trail - and what your UK plan costs

The Foreign Office warns that mobile coverage is limited in remote areas, including long stretches of the Annapurna Circuit, and suggests considering a satellite phone. An eSIM covers Kathmandu, Pokhara and the villages the networks reach; download offline maps and leave your plan with your lodge or guide. Independent trekkers must use a local guide or porter.

Nepal is among the dearest places to roam from the UK: EE charges £16 a day for only 10MB, O2's bolt-ons start at £26 for 100MB, Vodafone charges £1.20 per MB or £15 for an eight-day 50MB pass, and Three has no data service in Nepal at all. Most sockets are universal and take a UK plug. Convert all your rupees before you leave, and declare over 5,000 US dollars in cash.

Good to know before you go

How much is a Nepal visa for British citizens?+

30 US dollars for 15 days, 50 for 30 days or 125 for 90 days, paid online in advance or on arrival at Kathmandu airport (Nepal Department of Immigration, checked 9 October 2026).

Does Three work in Nepal?+

Not for data: Three's destination checker says data is not available in Nepal (checked 9 October 2026).
