Sky Mobile Roaming Charges 2026: Roaming Passport Plus Explained

Sky Mobile uses a single pass for most of the world: Roaming Passport Plus. It costs £2 for 24 hours and lets you use your UK plan in 120 destinations, including the EU, Switzerland, the USA, Turkey, Dubai, Egypt, Morocco and Thailand. The pass starts automatically once you use more than 10MB of data in a day, or make a call or send a text. Ireland costs nothing extra. Japan is the exception: Sky says roaming there is blocked until further notice. Below is how the pass works, its limits, and when a travel eSIM is the better buy.

Checked on 8 October 2026 against Sky's Roaming Passport Plus help article, its tariff guide (PDF dated 7 October 2026), its fair usage policy and its data roaming spend cap page.

How Roaming Passport Plus works

Sky's own wording: "Access your UK data, calls and texts plan in 120 popular holiday destinations for £2 for 24 hours."

  • It switches itself on. "The £2 pass activates automatically as soon as you call, text or use data, more than 10MB a day." You don't buy it in advance.
  • You only pay for the days you use. "You'll only be charged for the days you use data, calls and texts." The 10MB threshold resets at midnight UK time.
  • One pass covers several European countries. The EU, EEA and Switzerland count as one destination, so driving from France into Switzerland on the same day costs one £2 pass.
  • Outside Europe, each country is charged separately. Cross from the USA into Canada and you pay a pass for each.

A week of daily use is £14, and two weeks £28.

Sky VIP Diamond members, with 15 years or more as Sky customers, pay nothing for the pass. Platinum, Gold and Silver members pay £2 a day.

Where it works

The 120 destinations include the whole EU and EEA, plus Switzerland, Andorra, San Marino, Vatican City, the Faroe Islands, Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Moldova and Georgia. Further afield they include Turkey (and Northern Cyprus), the UAE, the USA, Egypt, Morocco and Thailand, as well as Australia, Canada, Mexico, China, India, Hong Kong, Singapore and Vietnam.

Three places work differently:

  • Republic of Ireland, Channel Islands and Isle of Man: your UK plan works at no extra cost, with no pass.
  • Monaco isn't in Roaming Passport Plus. It is charged at Rest of World rates: 36p per MB, 72p a minute for calls and 14p a text.
  • Japan isn't in the pass either. Sky's tariff guide page says "Roaming in Japan and Taiwan is blocked until further notice". The 7 October 2026 PDF still lists Japan rates, but take Sky's word on the help page: plan on your Sky SIM not working in Japan.

Sky has also blocked roaming in some countries during 2026, including Zimbabwe from 1 May and the Central African Republic from 10 June. If you're going somewhere unusual, check Sky's list before you fly.

The 25GB limit

Sky's fair use policy allows 25GB of data per billing cycle per SIM while roaming. Above that, data costs £2.50 per GB, charged pro rata. Calling or texting local or non-UK numbers costs extra: 55p a minute and 10p a text to EU and EEA numbers.

Is a travel eSIM worth it on Sky Mobile?

Sky's £2 a day is one of the cheaper ways to roam on a UK SIM, especially outside Europe, where the big networks charge £6 to £8 a day. So the honest answer depends on the trip:

  • Europe or the USA for a week (£14): a travel eSIM saves a little. A Europe eSIM from £2.59 or a USA eSIM from £2.59 is cheaper, but Sky's pass also covers your calls and texts.
  • Long trips: a month on the pass is about £60. A 30-day eSIM such as £1.76 for Turkey costs much less.
  • Japan: if Sky blocks roaming there, an eSIM like £1.75 is how you get online at all.

Using a travel eSIM alongside Sky

Sky's eSIM help page says that on compatible phones "you might be able to use two numbers at once, one with a regular SIM card and one with an eSIM." To keep your Sky number while your data runs on a travel eSIM:

  1. Install the travel eSIM at home, over Wi-Fi.
  2. Abroad, set it as your mobile data line.
  3. Turn data roaming off on your Sky SIM, so data can't trigger the £2 pass.

A call or text from your Sky line will still start a pass for that day, so use WhatsApp or another internet app over the eSIM if you want to pay nothing.

Spend caps

Sky sets a £45 a month data roaming spend cap per SIM, switched on by default. You can turn it off, but you can't change the amount. The £2 pass counts towards it, and Sky texts you at 80% and 100%. Sky's own monthly spend cap also matters: set it to £0 and the pass can't start. Sky's example is that a week's holiday needs a cap of at least £14.
