What Is an eSIM Data Plan?

Updated:

An eSIM data plan is a prepaid bundle of mobile data - say 1GB, 5GB or 20GB - tied to a set validity window and loaded onto the eSIM built into your phone. You choose the size up front, pay once, and use the data at local network speeds with no daily roaming charges.

Plans come in two shapes: single-country plans that cover one destination, and regional plans that stretch one data allowance across a whole area, like 31 countries on a Europe plan. Both are data-only, so your home SIM stays active for calls and texts through dual SIM.

Every eSIMpass data plan is prepaid with no activation fee and no auto-renewal, works in 200+ countries, and arrives instantly by email and QR code with no app to install. A 1GB week of data starts at under $2.

eSIM Data Plans: Pick the Right Size for Your Trip

How to Choose Your Data Plan

Size, buy and activate the right plan in three steps - about 5 minutes in total.

1

Size your data

Estimate your daily use, then pick a plan from 1GB up to 20GB with matching validity. Light users lean small; streamers and hotspot users size up. Most eSIMs can be topped up later if you need more.

2

Buy and scan the QR code

Pay by card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay or crypto. Your QR code arrives by email in minutes - scan it in your phone settings on Wi-Fi before you fly.

3

Activate on arrival

Switch on the eSIM line and data roaming when you land. Your allowance starts counting down and your phone connects to a local network automatically, usually within minutes.

Data Plans vs the Other Ways to Get Online

One is prepaid and sized to your trip; the rest bill by the day or make you queue.

eSIM Data Plan FAQ

How much data do I actually need for a trip?
It depends on your habits. Roughly 500MB a day covers maps, messaging and light browsing, so a 1GB plan suits a long weekend. Add social media and photos and you’re near 1GB a day, so a week of everyday use points to a 5GB plan. Stream video or tether a laptop and 10GB or more is safer.
What data plan sizes and validity periods can I choose?
Plans range from 1GB to 50GB, with validity from 7 to 30 days depending on the destination. You match the size to your trip length and usage - a small plan for a short visit, a larger 20GB or 30-day plan for extended stays.
Are there unlimited data plans?
Yes. Alongside per-GB bundles we sell unlimited plans, priced per day, with no allowance cap to run down - fair-use throttling may apply. Two differences matter before you buy: unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering, and they run on the travel dates you select at checkout rather than waiting for your first connection - the days count from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not, so have it installed by that date. Availability varies by destination.
What happens if I run out of data mid-trip?
Top up the eSIM already on your phone from your account in a couple of minutes, even on hotel Wi-Fi - no new QR code. If it has expired or its network does not offer top-ups, buy another plan and scan the new QR code instead; delivery is instant wherever you are.
Can I top up or stack a plan I already have?
Yes, for most eSIMs. Top up from your account and the extra data goes onto the same eSIM, with no new QR code - so heavy users often start small and top up only if they need to. Buying another plan is different: it comes as a separate eSIM with its own QR code.
When does the validity period start counting?
It depends on the plan. Per-GB plans start when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy or install it - so you can purchase early, scan the QR code at home, and only begin the clock once you land. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout - buy and install as early as you like, nothing starts before your chosen start date, but make sure the eSIM is installed by that date because the days count from it either way.
Single-country or regional plan - which should I pick?
If your trip stays in one country, a single-country plan is usually cheapest. Crossing several borders on one journey? A regional plan like the Europe eSIM covers 31 countries on one allowance, saving you from buying a separate plan for each stop.
Are there activation or hidden fees on a data plan?
No. Whichever size you choose, the checkout figure is the whole cost - no activation fee, no compulsory top-up, no renewal charge. Plans are prepaid, so there is nothing to cancel and no bill to run up.
Does a data plan include a phone number for calls?
When you size a plan, remember it covers data only. Calls and SMS still land on your home number through dual SIM, and voice apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime simply draw from whatever allowance you pick.
Can I use a data plan as a personal hotspot?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
I’m visiting several countries - do I need a plan for each one?
Not necessarily. Regional plans like the Europe eSIM (31 countries) or the Asia eSIM cover a whole region on one allowance and one QR code. For trips spanning different regions you can install several eSIMs and switch between them in settings.
Can I buy a data plan after I’ve already arrived?
Yes. The plan arrives by email the moment you order, so you can compare sizes on airport or hotel Wi-Fi and be online in minutes. That said, picking and scanning before you fly is the smoother option.
