Tunisia eSIM FAQ for UK Travellers

Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides mobile data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Tunisia?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in Tunisia?
Your Tunisia eSIM uses a local mobile network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Tunisia eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Tunisia. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Your eSIM for Tunisia - Tunis, Hammamet and Djerba

One plan covers Tunisia, so the same eSIM works in Tunis, the Hammamet and Sousse resorts and on the island of Djerba. Install it before you travel and you skip the local SIM kiosk and its passport-registration step.

Getting online at Tunis, Djerba and Enfidha

The eSIM connects when you switch off airplane mode at Tunis (TUN), Djerba (DJE) or Enfidha-Hammamet (NBE), the main resort gateway. Your transfer and maps are ready before you leave the terminal.

Coverage in the cities and resorts

Tunisia's networks (Ooredoo, Tunisie Telecom and Orange) cover the coast, the resort areas and the cities with solid 4G. Coverage fades towards the Sahara and remote desert spots, so download offline maps before excursions south.

Tunisia from the UK: no visa, but mind the dinars

British passport holders can visit Tunisia for up to 90 days without a visa; your passport needs to be valid for the whole stay, and you should make sure it is stamped on arrival. Border officers may ask for a hotel booking and a return ticket. Hotels charge a tourist tax of 8 dinars a night at three stars and 12 at four and five stars, for up to 10 nights.

Tunisia has strict currency controls: you cannot take dinars out of the country, so change only what you need and keep the official exchange receipts. The Foreign Office also notes that power cuts can briefly take out cash machines and card payments (gov.uk, updated 24 July 2026).

Flights, time and your UK plan

Enfidha, for Hammamet and Sousse, is two and a half to three hours away: Jet2 flies there from Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands, Leeds Bradford, Stansted and Manchester, and easyJet and TUI from Glasgow and Bristol. easyJet flies Luton to Djerba, and Tunisair flies to Tunis from Heathrow and Gatwick. Tunisia is on UK time in British Summer Time and one hour ahead in winter. Sockets are the European two-pin kind.

On a UK plan, EE charges £8 a day (£40 for a week), Three £7 a day, and O2 has no O2 Travel pass for Tunisia - only data bolt-ons from £26 for 100MB. Vodafone's eight-day passes run from £15 for 50MB to £60 for 1GB.

Good to know before you go

Do I need to register a passport like with a local SIM?+

No - local Tunisian SIMs require passport registration; a travel eSIM you install yourself skips that step.

Does it work on Djerba and in the resorts?+

Yes - the resort areas and Djerba are well covered. The Saharan interior thins out, so save offline maps for desert trips.

Can I take Tunisian dinars home?+

No. Tunisia does not allow dinars to be taken out of the country, so change money as you need it and keep your exchange receipts (gov.uk, updated 24 July 2026).
