Your eSIM for Egypt - Red Sea resorts, Cairo and the Nile
One plan covers Egypt end to end - the Red Sea resorts, Cairo, Luxor and Aswan - so the same eSIM works whether you are diving in Sharm el-Sheikh or cruising the Nile. Install it before you fly and you skip the local SIM kiosk and its passport-registration paperwork entirely.
Getting online at Cairo, Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada
The eSIM connects when you switch off airplane mode at Cairo (CAI), Sharm el-Sheikh (SSH) or Hurghada (HRG). Your resort transfer, taxi app and maps are ready immediately - useful when arrival halls are busy and you would rather not queue for a SIM.
Coverage in the resorts, cities and along the Nile
Egypt's networks (Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat and WE) cover the resort areas, the main cities and the Nile corridor with solid 4G; 5G is rolling out in the larger cities. Expect coverage to fade out in the open desert and at remote desert camps, so download offline maps before excursions to places like the White Desert.
Flying to the Red Sea from the UK
Hurghada is about six hours from the UK. easyJet flies there from Gatwick, Luton, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool, Newcastle and Belfast, among others, and TUI from Gatwick and Manchester. Jet2 joins from 11 February 2027, from Manchester, Birmingham, East Midlands, Leeds Bradford, Stansted and Glasgow.
Egypt is outside every UK network's Europe zone, so a week by the pool on your UK plan is charged as worldwide roaming. The table below shows what each network charges there.
The Egypt visa, for a British passport
British passport holders normally need a visa. You can buy one on arrival for 30 US dollars, cash only, valid for up to 30 days, or apply for an e-visa before you go. Bring the dollars in cash: it is the one thing on this trip your card will not pay for.
The free entry stamp you may have heard about is only for flights into Sharm el-Sheikh for stays under 15 days. It does not cover Hurghada, Marsa Alam or Cairo. Your passport must be valid for six months after the day you arrive and have a blank page.
This is the Foreign Office's guidance as updated on 4 August 2026; check the current version on gov.uk before you travel - it added a digital visa on arrival at Cairo airport on 1 August 2026, and the details keep moving.
Time, plugs and money
Egypt is usually two hours ahead of the UK. Both countries change their clocks, but not on the same dates: from the end of March to the end of April Egypt is only one hour ahead, and for a few days at the end of October three. Sockets are the European two-pin kind (types C and F), so bring an adaptor. You can take up to 5,000 Egyptian pounds in or out of the country.
