SMARTY Roaming Charges 2026: EU Roaming, Add-ons and Every Band
SMARTY, Three's SIM-only brand, includes roaming in its EU zone on every plan: unlimited calls and texts, and up to 12GB of data. Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man aren't in that zone and are charged separately. Outside the EU, nothing works until you buy a prepaid out-of-plan add-on: "Data, calls or texts outside the EU won't work". The add-on is then spent at per-MB rates from 10p in the USA and Turkey to £1 in Japan and Dubai. Below is each band, what the add-on buys, and when a travel eSIM is better value.

SMARTY's EU roaming
SMARTY's "Roaming EU" zone covers the EU countries plus Norway, Iceland, Ireland, Gibraltar, San Marino, Vatican City, the Azores, Madeira, the Balearic and Canary Islands, and the French overseas territories. On every plan you get:
- Unlimited calls and texts.
- Up to 12GB of data a month. If your plan has less than 12GB, you can use all of it.
- Alerts when you reach 80% of the 12GB, and again when you reach it.
The Republic of Ireland gets your full monthly allowance, with no 12GB limit. SMARTY says that's "to avoid the risk of inadvertent roaming charges on the border with Northern Ireland."
Need more than 12GB? An EU Roaming Data Pass unlocks the rest of your plan's data abroad: £3 for 1 day or £7 for 3 days.
Long trips: SMARTY's terms say you can roam in the EU for a maximum of 60 continuous days before service is suspended.
Not in the EU zone
Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man are "Band 1A", charged per use: on monthly plans, data costs 2p per MB and calls 10p a minute. Monaco is in Band 1, priced like the USA (below).
Outside the EU: add-on first
Outside the EU, SMARTY's network blocks calls, texts and data until you buy a prepaid out-of-plan add-on, in steps of £5 up to £15. Your usage is then taken from that credit at these rates:

The cap works like a safety net: the most you can load at once is £15, and SMARTY doesn't publish a separate roaming spend cap. But it doesn't buy much. At 10p per MB, £15 is about 150MB in the USA or Turkey. At £1 per MB in Japan or Dubai, it's 15MB.
Is a travel eSIM worth it on SMARTY?
- The EU: no, unless you need more than 12GB. SMARTY's included roaming is good.
- Switzerland: at 2p per MB, 1GB costs about £20. A Switzerland eSIM from £2.59 covers a ski week for far less.
- USA, Turkey, Egypt, Thailand: £15 of add-on buys about 150MB. A 30-day eSIM for £1.76 Turkey or £2.59 the USA gives you gigabytes.
- Japan and Dubai: at £1 per MB, an eSIM such as £1.75 for Japan or £2.91 for the UAE is the only realistic way to use data.

Using a travel eSIM alongside SMARTY
SMARTY sells eSIMs to new customers and notes that phones may hold "multiple eSIM profiles and/or a physical SIM slot". On a dual-SIM phone:
- Install the travel eSIM at home, over Wi-Fi.
- Abroad, choose it for mobile data.
- Turn data roaming off on your SMARTY line. Outside the EU, SMARTY won't connect at all without an add-on, so the eSIM is what keeps you online.
