Egypt eSIM FAQ for UK Travellers

Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides mobile data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Egypt?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in Egypt?
Your Egypt eSIM uses a local mobile network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Egypt eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Egypt. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Staying connected in Hurghada: the local guide

Hurghada's Red Sea marina with dive boats moored along the promenade

Emergency numbers

  • 122 - Police
  • 123 - Ambulance
  • 126 - Tourist Police (English-speaking help for visitors)

Time zone

EET (UTC+2; UTC+3 in summer - Egypt reinstated daylight saving from late April to late October)

Weather

Red Sea desert coast: very hot summers (33-37C), warm sunny winters (18-24C days, the peak season); almost no rain, reliably windy year-round

Hurghada is less a city than a 40-kilometre ribbon of resorts along the Red Sea, and Egypt's four networks - Vodafone Egypt, Orange, Etisalat (e&) and WE - all run towers along that coastal strip. Your eSIM connects through one of them, and 4G is solid in central El Dahar, the Sekalla hotel district, the El Mamsha promenade, and down through Sahl Hasheesh, Makadi Bay and Soma Bay. 5G exists in Egypt but is new and city-focused; treat 4G as what you will actually use.

Where the signal ends

Hurghada's coverage fails in two directions, and both are the reason you came. Out to sea: dive and snorkel boats heading to Giftun Island and Orange Bay lose usable signal within a few kilometres of the marina, so a full boat day is an offline day. Inland: quad-bike and jeep safaris into the Eastern Desert leave the coastal towers behind fast, and Bedouin-dinner camps are genuine dead zones. Save the excursion company's meeting-point pin and your hotel's address offline before either trip.

The WhatsApp call problem, honestly

Egypt restricts internet voice calls on mobile networks. In practice: WhatsApp messages, photos and voice notes go through fine, but WhatsApp, FaceTime and similar calls frequently fail to connect on mobile data - network policy, not a fault with your eSIM. Send voice notes instead of ringing home, and do not size your plan around daily video calls you may not be able to make; any call that does connect is a bonus.

About that all-inclusive Wi-Fi

The brochure says "free Wi-Fi" - the fine print, at many Hurghada resorts, says free in the lobby only, with in-room or beach coverage sold as a paid upgrade. Even paid tiers crawl in the evening when a thousand guests upload the day's snorkeling videos. Mobile data lets you scroll from your sunbed instead of commuting to the lobby couch.

The apps and habits that need data here

  • WhatsApp messaging runs Hurghada - dive centres, excursion desks and drivers all confirm bookings and pickup times by message, so being reachable matters even with calls restricted.
  • Taxis are negotiated, not metered in most cases; ride-hailing has a foothold in Hurghada but is far thinner than in Cairo. Data for a quick maps check of the route and distance is your fare-negotiation leverage.
  • Cash is king away from the resorts - the souk in El Dahar, small restaurants and taxis want Egyptian pounds, while hotels and malls take cards.
  • El Gouna day trips are easy - the planned town 30 minutes north is covered by the same networks, so your eSIM works there without any change.

Arriving

Hurghada International (HRG) sits ten to fifteen minutes from Sekalla, and most visitors leave it in a pre-booked resort transfer. Buying a local SIM at the airport means passport registration and tourist-kiosk pricing; an eSIM installed before you fly is live the moment airplane mode goes off - exactly when the driver's WhatsApp message with your pickup point arrives.

Flying in from the UK

Hurghada is about six hours from the UK. easyJet flies there from Gatwick, Luton, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool, Newcastle and Belfast, and TUI from Gatwick and Manchester; Jet2 adds Manchester, Birmingham, East Midlands, Leeds Bradford, Stansted and Glasgow from 11 February 2027.

You need a visa. The quickest is the visa on arrival: 30 US dollars, cash only, valid for up to 30 days, bought before passport control - so have dollars with you, as it is the one thing here your card will not cover. The free entry stamp you may have read about is for short stays flying into Sharm el-Sheikh only; it does not apply in Hurghada. Your passport needs six months' validity from the day you land and a blank page (gov.uk, updated 4 August 2026).

Hurghada is usually two hours ahead of the UK. Sockets are the European two-pin kind, so bring an adaptor. And Egypt is outside every UK network's Europe zone: a week on your UK plan is charged as worldwide roaming, typically £7 to £8 a day on the big four networks - see UK mobile roaming charges compared.

How much data do you need in Hurghada?

A resort week here is lighter on maps than a city break but heavier on everything else: lobby-only Wi-Fi pushes evening scrolling and photo backups onto mobile data, and voice notes replace blocked calls. For most travellers 1GB every 2 days is comfortable; go bigger if the resort charges for room Wi-Fi and you stream. If Hurghada is one stop on a route through Cairo or Luxor, the Egypt eSIM covers the whole country on one plan.

What to wear

On the resort strip and El Mamsha promenade, anything goes - resort-casual is the uniform. Walking El Dahar's souk is different: it is a working Egyptian neighbourhood, so cover shoulders and knees and you will get warmer service and less attention. Pack a windproof layer even in summer - boat decks are breezy at speed, and the wind that makes Hurghada a kitesurf capital cools evenings fast in winter. Reef-safe sunscreen is the one toiletry worth buying before you fly; the coral here is the whole point.

The photos everyone wants (and how to get yours)

Hurghada inverts the golden-hour rule: the Orange Bay and Giftun sandbar shots want harsh midday sun, because high light over shallow white sand is what produces that unreal turquoise - stand ankle-deep with the sandbar curving away behind you. The marina works the opposite way: shoot the boat masts and promenade at dusk when the lights come on. On desert quad trips, ask the guide to stop for the sunset silhouette against the Red Sea mountains. Bring a waterproof phone pouch for reef selfies - and leave the drone at home entirely: Egypt bans private drones without a Ministry of Defence permit, and airports routinely confiscate them on arrival.

Fun facts

Hurghada was a fishing village of a few hundred people, founded around 1905, until the first resort opened in 1979 and the 1980s building boom rewrote the coastline. Not a single river flows into the Red Sea - no silt, which is why visibility underwater is so absurdly good. And those reefs offshore belong to the world's northernmost coral reef ecosystem.

Big events

Honestly, Hurghada runs on seasons rather than festivals: winter sun (December to February) and the May-October wind season for kitesurfers are the real calendar. Ramadan and the Eid holidays shift about 11 days earlier each year - resorts operate normally, but Eid brings festive crowds of Egyptian holidaymakers to the coast. The one marquee cultural date nearby is the El Gouna Film Festival each October (the 2025 edition ran 16-24 October), 30 minutes up the road, drawing Arab cinema's biggest names.

Why people love it - and why some don't

The case for Hurghada is strong: world-class reef minutes from shore, guaranteed warm sun when Europe is grey, cheap direct flights from dozens of European cities, and all-inclusive value that is hard to beat. The complaints are just as real: the resort strip can feel interchangeable and placeless, vendor persistence in the tourist zones wears some people down, and the pharaonic Egypt you came to this country for is far away - Luxor is a four-hour drive each direction, which makes the "day trip" a 16-hour marathon. Know which trip you are booking: this is a sea holiday that happens to be in Egypt.

FAQ: Hurghada connectivity

Do WhatsApp calls work in Hurghada?

Often not - Egypt restricts VoIP calling on mobile networks nationwide, so WhatsApp and FaceTime calls commonly fail even with full 4G bars. Messages, photos and voice notes are unaffected. This applies to every SIM and eSIM in Egypt equally, so voice notes are the reliable way to keep in touch.

Will I have signal on a boat trip to Giftun or Orange Bay?

Only near shore. Signal fades within a few kilometres of the marina and most of the day is offline, often including the islands' beach stops. Tell anyone expecting replies, and download music or reading before boarding.

Is my hotel's all-inclusive Wi-Fi enough to skip mobile data?

Check the fine print first: many Hurghada resorts include Wi-Fi only in the lobby and charge for in-room or beach access, and evening speeds sag when the whole resort is online. Mobile data covers the gaps and works on excursion pickups, in taxis and in town, where hotel Wi-Fi obviously does not.
