A Ghana eSIM for the trip home or a first visit
Install it in the UK, switch it on when you land at Kotoka in Accra, and you have data for the drive from the airport, for mobile money and ride apps, and for keeping in touch while family borrow your phone. It is data only: your UK number stays live for calls and bank codes.
British Airways flies from Heathrow to Accra in about six and a half hours. Ghana keeps GMT all year, so it is on UK time in winter and an hour behind in British Summer Time. The sockets are the UK's three-pin type G - often universal - so your chargers work as they are.
Visa, the dual nationality card and money
British passport holders need a visa, applied for online through the Ghana High Commission and paid for online; an express service in person at the Ghana Premium Application Centre in London can take around three days. Your passport needs six months' validity. Ghanaian-British dual nationals can register with the Interior Ministry for a dual nationality card, and showing it on entry means you need no visa (gov.uk, updated 2 July 2026).
Declare all foreign currency on arrival and do not carry more than 10,000 US dollars' worth. Cards are accepted in many hotels and shops - but not Mastercard, which the Foreign Office says is not widely accepted - and cash machines thin out in rural areas.
On a UK plan, EE charges £8 a day (£40 a week), O2 Travel is £7 a day, Vodafone £8 a day unless your plan includes it, and Three £7 or £8.
