Israel eSIM FAQ for UK Travellers

Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides mobile data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Israel?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in Israel?
Your Israel eSIM uses a local mobile network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Israel eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Israel. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Israel from the UK: apply for the ETA-IL first

British passport holders can visit Israel as tourists without a visa for up to three months, but since 1 January 2025 you need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, the ETA-IL, before you travel: 25 shekels on the Population and Immigration Authority's official site, non-refundable, valid for two years or until your passport expires. Your passport needs 90 days' validity after arrival. At Ben Gurion you get a paper entry card instead of a stamp - keep it - and bags and devices may be searched (gov.uk, updated 22 July 2026).

Check the Foreign Office's current travel advice before booking: it warns of possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and disruption at Ben Gurion, and advises signing up to alerts from Israel's Home Front Command.

Flights, time, plugs and your UK plan

El Al flies from Heathrow up to three times a day in about four hours 40 minutes, British Airways is scheduled to return to Tel Aviv from Heathrow from 25 October, and Wizz Air and El Al fly from Luton, with Wizz also from Gatwick. Israel is two hours ahead of the UK almost all year. Sockets are types C and H, so bring an adaptor.

On a UK plan, EE charges £6 a day (£30 a week), O2 Travel £7, Vodafone £8 and Three £5 on most plans. An eSIM keeps alerts and maps working without a local SIM.

Good to know before you go

Do British citizens need an ETA to visit Israel?+

Yes. Since 1 January 2025, apply for the ETA-IL before travelling: 25 shekels, valid for two years or until your passport expires (gov.uk, updated 22 July 2026; Israel's Population and Immigration Authority, checked 9 October 2026).
