Saudi Arabia eSIM FAQ for UK Travellers

Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides mobile data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Saudi Arabia?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in Saudi Arabia?
Your Saudi Arabia eSIM uses a local mobile network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Saudi Arabia eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Saudi Arabia. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Umrah from the UK: what to sort before you fly

British pilgrims can perform Umrah outside the Hajj season on a tourist e-visa or an electronic visa waiver; Hajj needs its own separate visa, and Hajj places can only be booked through the official Nusuk Hajj platform. Everyone performing Hajj or Umrah needs a certificate of vaccination against the ACWY strains of meningitis at least 10 days before arriving. The Foreign Office warns that UK-based organised crime groups target people planning Hajj or Umrah trips: book with an ATOL-protected operator (gov.uk pilgrimage page, updated 8 October 2026).

An eSIM helps on the days that matter most - finding your group, your hotel and your transport in Makkah and Madinah - without a SIM counter queue at Jeddah. It is data only; if you need emergency help without a Saudi SIM, the Foreign Office says to call 112.

Visas for a British passport

You need a visa or authorisation. The ETA - 50 riyals on Saudi Arabia's official visa platform, processed in one to three working days - lasts 730 days and allows multiple entries up to 180 days in total. The tourist e-visa lasts a year, allows up to 90 days in total, includes health insurance and can be bought online or on arrival. Your passport needs six months' validity, and a passport showing travel to Israel may be refused (gov.uk, updated 8 October 2026).

Flights, time, plugs and your UK plan

British Airways flies from Heathrow to Jeddah and Riyadh, Saudia flies to both from Heathrow and to Jeddah from Manchester, and Riyadh Air flies Manchester to Riyadh three times a week. Saudi Arabia is three hours ahead of the UK in winter and two in British Summer Time. Sockets are the UK's type G - no adaptor needed.

On a UK plan, EE charges £8 a day (£40 a week), O2 Travel £7, Vodafone £8 and Three £7 or £8.

Good to know before you go

What do I need for Umrah from the UK?+

A tourist e-visa or electronic visa waiver (outside Hajj season), a certificate of ACWY meningitis vaccination at least 10 days before arrival, and an ATOL-protected booking - the Foreign Office warns of scams targeting UK pilgrims (gov.uk, updated 8 October 2026).

Do UK plugs work in Saudi Arabia?+

Yes. Saudi Arabia uses the UK's three-pin type G sockets at 230 V.
