Jamaica eSIM FAQ for UK Travellers

Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides mobile data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Jamaica?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in Jamaica?
Your Jamaica eSIM uses a local mobile network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Jamaica eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Jamaica. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Going home to Jamaica, or on holiday: get online at the airport

A Jamaica eSIM gives you data across the island from the moment you land at Montego Bay or Kingston - for the taxi, for WhatsApp with family, for directions - without queueing for a SIM. It is data only, so your UK number stays on your phone for calls and the texts your bank sends, and WhatsApp calls work as normal.

Your UK plan is costly there: EE sells only a 24-hour pass at £8 with 500MB of data, O2 Travel is £7 a day, Vodafone £8 a day unless your plan includes it, and Three £7 or £8 a day depending on when you joined.

Before you fly: the C5 form and your passport

British passport holders do not need a visa and are usually allowed to stay up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for the whole stay and have two blank pages. Fill in Jamaica's immigration and customs form, the C5, online before you arrive at enterjamaica.com, the official site of Jamaica's Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency - and declare any cash of 10,000 US dollars or more on it. British-Jamaican dual nationals need a valid British passport (or a certificate of entitlement) to come back to the UK (gov.uk, updated 6 May 2026).

Flights, time and power

Virgin Atlantic flies from Heathrow to Montego Bay all year in nine to ten hours, TUI flies direct to Montego Bay from London in about ten, and British Airways serves Kingston from Gatwick up to four times a week. Jamaica is five hours behind the UK in winter and six in British Summer Time; it does not change its clocks.

Power is the surprise: sockets are the flat-pin American types A and B at 110 volts, so bring an adaptor and check your chargers say 100-240V. The Foreign Office advises using cash machines in daylight and taking care when you withdraw money.

Good to know before you go

Do I need to fill in a form before flying to Jamaica?+

Yes - the immigration and customs form C5, online at enterjamaica.com before you arrive, where possible. British passport holders need no visa for stays of up to 90 days (gov.uk, updated 6 May 2026).

Do UK plugs work in Jamaica?+

No. Jamaica uses flat-pin type A and B sockets at 110 volts. Bring an adaptor, and check your chargers accept 110V - most phone and laptop chargers do.
