Pakistan eSIM FAQ for UK Travellers

Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides mobile data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Pakistan?
The Pakistan plans run from 3 GB for 15 days to 50 GB for 30 days, plus unlimited day passes. For maps, messaging and calls over WhatsApp, a few gigabytes cover a week or two; take more if you stream, video-call often or share photos and video.
What network speeds will I get in Pakistan?
You will be on Jazz's 4G in the big cities; in the north, much of the region runs on a network this eSIM does not use. Jazz has 5G in some major cities, but plan on 4G.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Pakistan eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Pakistan. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

No PTA phone registration while you use this eSIM

Pakistan blocks phones used with a Pakistani SIM unless they are registered with the PTA, the telecoms regulator. Phones that roam on a foreign SIM or eSIM are exempt for your whole stay, with no time limit and no tax - that is the official guidance from Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its tax authority. This eSIM counts as a foreign SIM, so you can use your phone without registering it.

Visiting family and keeping your Pakistani SIM in the same phone? Then the phone counts as a local device and has to be registered, or it will be blocked - the eSIM does not change that. The PTA's registration site, dirbs.pta.gov.pk, explains the options. This reflects the official guidance we checked in October 2026.

One network: Jazz

This eSIM uses Jazz, one of Pakistan's main mobile networks, with 4G in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and the other big cities. It uses Jazz only: where Jazz is weak, it cannot switch to Zong or Ufone. Jazz began offering 5G in some major cities in March 2026, but plan on 4G with this eSIM.

It carries data only - no Pakistani number - and WhatsApp keeps working on your usual number. Fixed-data plans run from 15 to 30 days, and there are unlimited day passes for 1 to 30 days, with fair-use limits on heavy use.

Hunza, Skardu and the north

Coverage in Gilgit-Baltistan is limited and depends on the network. Much of the region, especially away from the main towns, is served by SCO, a separate regional network this eSIM does not use, so expect long stretches without signal on trekking routes, high passes and in side valleys. Save offline maps, tickets and bookings before you head north.

When mobile data is switched off

The authorities sometimes suspend mobile data in particular cities or regions - around religious holidays such as Muharram, during protests, or for security reasons. In Azad Kashmir, mobile data was suspended in June 2026 and was still off in mid-September. A travel eSIM uses the same local network, so it is affected too: before a big holiday or an announced protest, save what you will need offline.

Visiting family in Pakistan from the UK

British passport holders need a visa, applied for in advance; NICOP and SNICOP holders can enter without one. Your passport must be valid for six months from the date you apply - not the date you travel. Make sure it is stamped when you arrive: the Foreign Office warns that leaving without an entry stamp is difficult (gov.uk, updated 22 September 2026).

Pakistan International Airlines was taken off the UK Air Safety List in July 2025, which allowed it to fly to the UK again; check PIA's current timetable for Manchester and London. Pakistan is four hours ahead of the UK in British Summer Time and five in winter.

What UK networks charge in Pakistan

EE puts Pakistan in its dearest daily band: £8 for 24 hours with only 500MB of data. Vodafone charges £8 a day, Three £7 or £8 depending on when you joined, and O2 sells data bolt-ons from £9 for 1GB.

Most Pakistani sockets are universal and take a UK plug, though some are only the round-pin types C and D, so a small adaptor is worth packing. The Foreign Office notes that card fraud is common.

Good to know before you go

I have a Pakistani SIM too. Do I still need to register my phone?+

Yes, if the Pakistani SIM is in the same phone - the roaming exemption only covers a phone used with foreign SIMs. On this eSIM alone, no registration is needed.

Does the eSIM work in Hunza and Skardu?+

Expect gaps. Coverage in Gilgit-Baltistan is limited and much of it runs on SCO, a regional network this eSIM does not use, so plan for long stretches offline away from the main towns.

Is there 5G in Pakistan?+

Jazz and Zong began 5G in some major cities in March 2026, but this eSIM should be expected to use Jazz's 4G.

Do I need a visa for Pakistan if I have a British passport?+

Yes, applied for in advance - unless you hold a NICOP or SNICOP card, which lets you enter without one (gov.uk, updated 22 September 2026).
