Tanzania eSIM FAQ for UK Travellers

Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides mobile data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Tanzania?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in Tanzania?
Your Tanzania eSIM uses a local mobile network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Tanzania eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Tanzania. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

A Tanzania eSIM for travellers from the UK

One plan covers mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, so the same eSIM works from Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti to the beaches of Nungwi and Paje. Install it at home and switch it on when you land. It is data only, so your UK number stays on your phone for bank texts.

Tanzania is costly on a UK plan: EE and Vodafone charge £8 a day, and O2's cheapest bolt-on is 100MB for £26 - barely enough for a day of maps.

Visa and the insurance you must buy locally

British passport holders need a visa: apply for the e-visa before you go, or buy a single-entry visa on arrival at the main airports. The ordinary visa costs 50 US dollars and lasts up to 90 days. Your passport needs six months' validity and a blank page, and you must be able to show a return or onward ticket.

Every visitor must also have Tanzania's inbound travel insurance, bought from the state insurer of the place you arrive: the National Insurance Corporation if you land on the mainland, or the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation through Visit Zanzibar if you land on Zanzibar. It covers up to 92 days, your UK policy does not replace it, and you can be refused entry without it (gov.uk, updated 6 October 2026).

Flights, plugs and money

There is no non-stop flight from the UK, and Tanzanian airlines are not allowed to fly to the UK, so you connect on the way. Tanzania is three hours ahead of the UK in winter and two in British Summer Time. Sockets are the UK three-pin type G, so your chargers work as they are. Cash machines in the cities take foreign debit cards but can break down or run dry, and Scottish or Northern Irish pound notes get a worse exchange rate. On Zanzibar, dress modestly away from the beach: the authorities can fine visitors 700 US dollars or more for clothing they consider inappropriate.

Good to know before you go

Do I need special travel insurance for Tanzania?+

Yes. All visitors to mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar must buy the state inbound travel insurance for up to 92 days, from the insurer of their first port of entry. You may be refused entry without it (gov.uk, updated 6 October 2026).

How much is a Tanzania visa?+

50 US dollars for the ordinary visa, valid for up to 90 days, according to Tanzania's Immigration Department (checked 9 October 2026). Apply online before you go or buy a single-entry visa on arrival.
