Australia eSIM FAQ for UK Travellers

Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides mobile data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Australia?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in Australia?
Your Australia eSIM uses a local mobile network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Australia eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Australia. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

An Australia eSIM for travellers from the UK

One plan covers the whole country, from Sydney and Melbourne to the Gold Coast, Perth and the road up to Cairns. Install it before you leave the UK: after a flight of 17 hours or more, the last thing you want is a SIM counter queue. It is data only, so you keep your UK number for banking texts, and calls and messages go through WhatsApp or FaceTime as usual.

Getting there from the UK

The only non-stop flight is Qantas from Heathrow to Perth, at around 17 and a half hours. Everything else stops on the way - British Airways and Qantas fly to Sydney via Singapore, about 23 hours in all.

You need a visa, and you apply before you fly

British citizens need permission to enter Australia, but for a holiday it is quick: the eVisitor (subclass 651) is free, or the ETA (subclass 601) through the Australian ETA app, which has an AUD 20 service charge. Either lets you stay up to three months on each visit. Apply only through the Australian government's own website or app: the eVisitor has no fee at all.

On the plane you fill in an Incoming Passenger Card, and Australia's biosecurity rules are strict: declare food, plants and anything made from wood or animal products. This follows gov.uk (updated 19 March 2026) and the Department of Home Affairs pages, read on 8 October 2026.

Time difference and plugs

Sydney and Melbourne are nine hours ahead of the UK during British Summer Time and eleven hours ahead in the UK winter; Perth is seven to eight hours ahead. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not change their clocks, so the gap differs by state. Sockets are Australia's own angled two-pin type (type I), so a UK plug needs an adaptor.

Good to know before you go

Do I need a visa for Australia with a British passport?+

Yes, but for a holiday you can get an eVisitor online for free, or an ETA through the official app for an AUD 20 service charge. Both allow stays of up to three months per visit. Apply before you fly.

Do UK plugs work in Australia?+

No. Australia uses type I sockets, so you need an adaptor. The voltage, 230 V, is the same as in the UK.
