Vodacom only: strong in towns, gaps in the bush
Every plan on this eSIM uses Vodacom, one of South Africa's major networks. Vodacom says its 4G reaches more than 99% of the population and its 5G more than 60%, mostly in the cities. MTN, Cell C and Telkom are not an option, so a Vodacom dead spot means no data.
It has no South African number, so calls and texts to an SA number - bank codes included - cannot reach it. If you have a South African SIM, keep it in your phone alongside the eSIM.
National parks and long drives
Those coverage figures count people, not land. In the national parks and on long empty stretches of road, signal comes and goes: travellers report coverage around the main rest camps, but large areas in between have none. Save your route in Google Maps for offline use before you leave camp or set off on a long drive.
Power cuts, and keeping your phone
There has been no national load shedding since 16 May 2025, according to Eskom. Local power cuts still happen, in some areas of Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape in particular, and they can take a nearby mast offline.
Canada's travel advice warns about phone theft in restaurants and bars and smash-and-grab theft from cars at traffic lights, and the UK's about snatching of valuables - keep your phone out of sight when you are not using it.
Lesotho, Eswatini and the rest of the region
The eSIM covers South Africa only. Around Maseru or the Eswatini border crossings, your phone may roam onto a Lesotho or Eswatini network, which this plan does not cover - lock it onto Vodacom in your network settings. For a trip that continues into Botswana or Zambia, the Africa eSIM covers both; for Namibia, take a separate Namibia eSIM.
South Africa from the UK: no jet lag, new paperwork
Virgin Atlantic flies from Heathrow to Johannesburg every day, and to Cape Town daily in season, in about 11 hours. South Africa is only two hours ahead of the UK in winter and one hour in British Summer Time.
No visa is needed for up to 90 days, but your passport must be valid for 30 days after you leave and have two blank pages. Since 1 July 2026 every traveller entering or leaving South Africa must also submit an online traveller declaration before travelling. Travelling with children under 18 has extra requirements, and South African-British dual nationals must use their South African passport (gov.uk, updated 8 July 2026).
Plugs, money and your UK plan
South African sockets are types C, M and N, so a UK plug needs an adaptor. The Foreign Office warns that crime around cash machines and card skimming are common. Using a UK plan costs £6 a day on EE, £8 on Vodafone (included with its Global Roam plans), £7 or £8 on Three depending on when you joined, and O2 data bolt-ons from £9 for 1GB.
