Ireland eSIM FAQ for UK Travellers
Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides mobile data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Ireland?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in Ireland?
Your Ireland eSIM uses a local mobile network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Ireland eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Ireland. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.
Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.
Skip Airport WiFi in Ireland - Land with Data Sorted
Your eSIM for Ireland, from Dublin to the Wild Atlantic Way
One plan covers the Republic of Ireland, so the same eSIM works in Dublin, Galway and Cork and out along the Wild Atlantic Way and the Ring of Kerry. Install it before you fly, switch off airplane mode on arrival, and you are online for maps and bookings straight away.
Getting online at Dublin, Cork and Shannon
The eSIM connects automatically when you turn off airplane mode at Dublin (DUB), Cork (ORK) or Shannon (SNN). Your airport coach, car-hire shuttle and maps are ready the moment you land - handy before a long drive west.
Coverage in the cities and the rural west
Ireland's networks - Vodafone, Three Ireland and Eir - give 4G/LTE and growing 5G across Dublin and the towns, with reliable coverage on the main roads. Signal naturally thins in the rural west - Connemara, the Kerry mountains and parts of Donegal - and along remote stretches of the Wild Atlantic Way, so download offline maps for those drives.
A note on Northern Ireland
This plan covers the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland (Belfast, the Giant’s Causeway, Derry) is part of the United Kingdom, so if your trip crosses the border you will want a UK plan for that leg, or a Europe regional plan that includes both.
Good to know before you go
Does this eSIM cover Northern Ireland and Belfast?+
No. This plan covers the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, so use a United Kingdom plan there, or a Europe regional plan if your trip spans both.
Will I have signal along the Wild Atlantic Way and the Ring of Kerry?+
Coverage is good in the towns and on the main routes. Remote headlands, mountain passes and parts of Connemara and Donegal can drop out, so save offline maps for the scenic drives.
Is it cheaper than roaming in Ireland?+
For most visitors from outside the EU, yes - a prepaid travel eSIM bought before you go is usually far cheaper than pay-as-you-go roaming for the same amount of data.
