United States eSIM FAQ for UK Travellers

Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides mobile data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in United States?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in United States?
Your United States eSIM uses a local mobile network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my United States eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in United States. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Skip Airport WiFi in United States - Land with Data Sorted

One eSIM, coast to coast

A single plan covers the entire United States, so the same eSIM works in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago and everywhere along the way. Scan the QR code before you fly, switch off airplane mode after landing, and you are connected without setting foot in a US network store.

That matters in the US, where buying a local SIM as a visitor usually means ID checks, store queues and a monthly plan you do not want. The eSIM skips all of it.

Skip the network store - online at JFK, LAX and beyond

Set the eSIM up at home and it connects the moment you turn off airplane mode at JFK, Newark, LAX, O’Hare, Miami or San Francisco. Your rideshare app, hotel check-in and maps are ready before you reach baggage claim - no hunting for airport Wi-Fi.

Coverage in the cities, on the highways and in the parks

The plan runs on the major US networks (AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon coverage), with widespread 5G across cities and strong signal along the interstate highways. That is ideal for navigation on a long road trip, rideshare, and streaming a podcast between stops.

As with any US network, deep backcountry in the big national parks - parts of Yellowstone, Death Valley or the Grand Canyon rim trails - can drop to no signal. Download offline maps before you head out, then you are covered again as you return to the highways and gateway towns.

How much data for a US trip

American trips are data-hungry: constant GPS navigation, rideshare, and maps across long distances add up fast. For a one- or two-week trip with daily driving and navigation, lean towards a larger plan, and pick one with hotspot support if you want to share data to a laptop or a travel companion.

The ESTA, for a British passport

You need an approved ESTA or a visa to enter or even transit the US, and you need an e-passport to use the Visa Waiver Program. The ESTA costs 40.27 US dollars, rising to 40.62 on 16 October 2026 - apply only on the official US government site. If your existing ESTA does not include the selfie photo US Customs and Border Protection now requires, you may need a new one. Your passport must be valid for the whole stay (gov.uk, updated 18 August 2026).

At the border, officers may ask to inspect your devices, messages and social media. There are no special healthcare arrangements for British visitors and treatment is expensive, so travel insurance with medical cover matters. Cash over 10,000 dollars must be reported to CBP.

Flights and time zones from the UK

Heathrow alone has more than 20 departures a day to New York JFK, about seven and three-quarter to eight and a quarter hours, plus non-stops to Boston, Newark, Chicago, Miami, Orlando, Los Angeles and San Francisco. New York is five hours behind the UK and Los Angeles eight - except for one week in autumn (25 October to 1 November 2026) when the gap shrinks by an hour, because the UK changes its clocks first. Sockets are flat-pin types A and B at 120 volts; bring an adaptor and check your chargers.

Good to know before you go

Does it work in national parks like Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon?+

You will have signal in the gateway towns, on the main roads and at most viewpoints. Deep backcountry and remote trails can lose service entirely - the same as any US network - so download offline maps before heading in.

Will one plan work in both New York and California?+

Yes. It is a single nationwide plan, so the same eSIM works coast to coast - New York, California, Florida, Las Vegas and everywhere in between - with no need to switch plans.

Can I use it for hotspot and rideshare apps?+

Rideshare and navigation apps work anywhere you have signal. Tethering/hotspot is supported on plans that include it - check the plan details if sharing data to a laptop or another device matters for your trip.

How much is an ESTA from the UK?+

40.27 US dollars, rising to 40.62 on 16 October 2026, on the official US government site (US Federal Register notice of 1 October 2026).
