Norway eSIM FAQ for UK Travellers

Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides mobile data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Norway?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in Norway?
Your Norway eSIM uses a local mobile network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Norway eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Norway. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Your eSIM for Norway - fjords, Arctic and the Northern Lights

One plan covers Norway from Oslo to the Arctic, so the same eSIM works in the fjords, in Tromso under the Northern Lights and out on the Lofoten Islands. Set it up before you fly and you land connected for transfers and maps.

Arriving at Oslo, Bergen and Tromso

The eSIM connects when you turn off airplane mode at Oslo (OSL), Bergen (BGO) or Tromso (TOS). The Flytoget airport train, your maps and aurora-forecast apps are ready before you leave the terminal.

Coverage in the cities and along the fjords

Norway's networks (Telenor, Telia and Ice) cover the cities, the main fjord routes and the coastal towns surprisingly well for such rugged terrain, with 4G/5G in populated areas. Deep fjord arms, high mountain passes and the far Arctic interior will drop out, so download offline maps for scenic drives and hikes.

Norway on a UK plan: free on Vodafone, charged on most others

Norway is outside the EU but in every big UK network's Europe zone, and one network treats it specially: Vodafone puts Norway in its Zone A with Ireland, the Isle of Man and Iceland, included on all its pay monthly plans. O2 includes it up to 25GB. EE charges £2.72 a day (£16.50 a week) on plans since July 2021, and Three £2 or £2.75 depending on when you joined. A Norway eSIM still helps if you will burn through data on the Hurtigruten or a fjord road trip.

Entry and money

Norway is in the Schengen area: 90 days in any 180 across all Schengen countries, a passport issued less than ten years before you arrive and valid three months after you leave. Since April 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System takes your fingerprints and photo on first entry, free; ETIAS is not running yet. Declare cash of 25,000 Norwegian krone or more (gov.uk, updated 25 August 2026). SAS and British Airways fly Heathrow to Oslo several times a day in just over two hours, and Norway is always one hour ahead of the UK.

Good to know before you go

Is there coverage in the fjords and for the Northern Lights?+

The fjord towns and main routes are well covered, and Tromso and the aurora-viewing areas generally have signal. Remote fjord arms and high passes can drop out, so save offline maps.

Does it work on the Lofoten Islands?+

Yes - the main Lofoten towns and roads are covered. The most remote beaches and trails can be patchy.

Is Norway included in my UK roaming?+

Usually, as part of the Europe zone: Vodafone includes it on all pay monthly plans and O2 up to 25GB, while EE charges £2.72 a day and Three £2 or £2.75 on most recent plans (checked 9 October 2026).
