Switzerland eSIM FAQ for UK Travellers

Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides mobile data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Switzerland?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in Switzerland?
Your Switzerland eSIM uses a local mobile network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Switzerland eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Switzerland. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Your eSIM for Switzerland - and why EU plans do not cover it

Switzerland sits outside the EU, so an EU eSIM usually will not cover it (or only at extra cost) - a dedicated Switzerland plan keeps things predictable. Install it before you travel, switch off airplane mode on arrival, and you are connected for the whole Alpine trip.

Getting online at Zurich and Geneva

The eSIM connects when you turn off airplane mode at Zurich (ZRH) or Geneva (GVA). Your train ticket, maps and the SBB app are ready before you reach the platform - and in Switzerland the train is almost always the next step.

Coverage in the cities, the valleys and the scenic trains

Switzerland's networks (Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt) are among Europe's best, with 5G in the cities and strong coverage through the valleys and resort towns - Zermatt, Interlaken, Lucerne. You stay online on the scenic rail routes like the Glacier Express and the Jungfrau line for most of the journey, with drops only in the long Alpine tunnels and on high, remote peaks.

Switzerland on a UK plan: in most Europe zones, not all

Switzerland is outside the EU, which is why EU carriers' roaming does not cover it - but most UK networks include it anyway: EE, O2, Vodafone, Three and Tesco Mobile all count it in their Europe zone. The exceptions catch people out: giffgaff charges its rest-of-the-world rates there, SMARTY charges per megabyte, and iD Mobile does not include it at all. Check yours in the table below before a ski week in Verbier or Zermatt.

Switzerland follows the Schengen rules, and your GHIC is valid there for medically necessary state healthcare. If you drive, you must buy and display a motorway vignette (gov.uk, updated 11 August 2026). One more thing to pack: Swiss sockets are type J, used only in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, and a UK plug will not fit - a standard European two-pin adaptor usually works in them.

Good to know before you go

Will my EU eSIM work in Switzerland?+

Often not - Switzerland is outside the EU, so many EU plans exclude it or charge extra. A dedicated Switzerland eSIM avoids that.

Does it work on the Glacier Express and mountain railways?+

Yes for most of the route - coverage through the valleys and resort towns is strong. Long Alpine tunnels and high remote sections can briefly drop signal.

Is Switzerland included in UK roaming?+

On EE, O2, Vodafone, Three and Tesco Mobile, yes - in their Europe zones. On giffgaff, SMARTY and iD Mobile it is charged separately or not included (each network's own terms, 9 October 2026).
