One eSIM for the whole of Spain
This single plan covers all of Spain - Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and everywhere in between - so you do not need a different eSIM for each city. Scan the QR code before you travel, turn off airplane mode when you land, and you are online immediately.
There is no separate "Madrid eSIM" or "Barcelona eSIM": it is one Spain-wide plan that keeps working as you move around the country.
Online at Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat
Install the eSIM at home and it connects automatically when you switch off airplane mode at Madrid-Barajas (MAD), Barcelona-El Prat (BCN), Palma (PMI) or Malaga (AGP). You can order a taxi, buy a metro ticket or check your hotel directions before you have left the arrivals hall.
Coverage across the mainland and the islands
Spain's networks - Movistar, Vodafone, Orange and Yoigo - give you fast 5G across the cities and solid 4G almost everywhere else. The plan also covers the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza) and the Canary Islands, so a beach week on the islands is connected too.
For a typical trip of maps, messaging and the odd video call a few GB is plenty; choose a larger plan if you will be streaming or working from a laptop.
Day trips and AVE high-speed trains
Because it is a nationwide plan, the same eSIM keeps working on every excursion - a day trip from Madrid to Toledo or Segovia, the Alhambra in Granada, or a fast AVE train between Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Valencia. You stay online for the whole journey, no new plan required when you change cities.
Spain since Brexit: the passport rules that changed
You can visit Spain without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180 - but that allowance covers the whole Schengen area, so days in France, Portugal or Italy in the same period count towards it. Your passport has to meet two tests: issued less than ten years before the day you arrive, and valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave.
Since 10 April 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System is fully running: the first time you cross, you give fingerprints and a photo at the border instead of having your passport stamped. It is free, children aged 11 or under are only photographed, and the record lasts three years, so the first trip takes longer at passport control than the next ones. Allow for it on a tight airport transfer.
ETIAS, the EU travel authorisation, is not running yet: the EU says no applications are being taken and the start date will be announced several months in advance. When it starts it will cost 20 euros. Any website charging you for one today is not the official service.
The Canaries are on UK time; the rest of Spain is not
Mainland Spain and the Balearics are one hour ahead of the UK all year. Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are on the same time as the UK, and change their clocks on the same weekends. Flights reflect the distance too: about two hours to Barcelona, two and a half to Palma, nearly three to Málaga, and four to four and a half to the Canaries.
Sockets are the European two-pin kind (types C and F), so pack an adaptor. Spain is in the Europe zone of every big UK network, but EE, Vodafone and Three add a daily charge on most plans started since 2021 (O2 does not) - the table below shows each network's.
